Conception of Vocabulary

Vocabulary is a list of words used in a book, usually with definition or translation as (Hornby 1987:47). Vocabulary means having a great skill or knowledge. Vocabulary is also defined as the ability or the proficiency in understanding meanings and the use of the vocabulary which were found in the context of translation. Vocabulary might have different or multiple meaning as they are put in different sentences contexts (Windra. 2004:8).

Vocabulary is the central element in the language which links all skills efficiency in speaking, listening, writing or reading. Paulston (1976 : 55) states that vocabulary skill is one linguistic factor, which influences the students ‘communication skill. One thing that most interferes with our students' speaking ability is poor vocabulary and we have recently come to accept the fact that our students have been right all these years when they have complained about not knowing and not being taught enough words

The above statement reveals that the need of a good stock of vocabulary in most importantly felt all levels of English learning, be it elementary or advanced. In order to be able to communicate effectively, the learners also need a sufficient mastery in vocabulary because one word in this area often causes communication to break down. On the other hand vocabulary is still one of the major problems encountered by EFL learners. Many students fail to communicate effectively because they do not have sufficient vocabulary mastery.
